Google Maps is the best BlackBerry mapping solution I’ve found and it just got a whole lot cooler. The Layers function will overlay different information sets on the the current map few. For instance, you can overlay a location-aware Wikipedia screen. Or Latitude. Or even make your own favorite locations and travel itinerary in a function called My Maps. You really should watch the demo video to see it in action. It’s killer. Update your BlackBerry at m.google.com/maps.

Research IN Motion seems to be pushing out a few upgrades in 2009, the BlackBerry Onyx, BlackBerry Storm 2, BlackBerry Essex and BlackBerry “Striker” 9100 are all expected to hit store shelves before 2010 hits.

So with this in mind, each of these four expected BlackBerry smartphones, and gives their views on each handset being an upgrade to devices we’ve already seen this year.

The one to note of course in the BlackBerry “Striker” 9100, which nothing is really known about other than it will be an update to the BlackBerry Pearl, although they say that upgrade won’t offer too much in performance or form factor. So to read all the views on each BlackBerry smartphone just follow the link.

Travel Genius by MobileVision is a location based search tool that helps you to quickly find and get to the places or services you need when you are out and about. It combines the best features of a GPS tool – minus the monthly fees – with powerful Internet search options and tucks them neatly into a simple user interface that works on any BlackBerry smartphone (OS 4.2+).

How often have you been out traveling and need something (a taxi ride, dry cleaning or gas), and even though you have a wireless Internet browser you still don’t know exactly where you are to start your search? We’ve all been there – wherever ‘there’ is! Now with Travel Genius you are only a couple of clicks away from knowing where you are and how to get the service or to the location you need. One-click choices like “ATM”, “Parking” or “Movies” make searching easy. Need something that’s not listed? There is a custom search feature, so you can look up anything you want. Nothing is ad-driven, so you can be sure that your results include all the options – not just the ones that someone paid to put there. And it all utilizes the built-in GPS or manual address entry.

Do you travel a lot? Travel Genius allows you to create favorites and save them. Finding what you need is even faster with favorites. Ever have a hard time finding your parked car? (That’s a rhetorical question.) With favorites, you can do things like snap a photo of your parking spot, grab the GPS location and then later request map directions to find your way back. Even when you’re busy, traveling and away from your normal routine you’ll look like, well, a genius.

End the uncertainty and hunt-n-peck nature of finding services and locations when you’re away from home. Get to where you need and what you need faster and more accurately every time.

For complete mapping capability, Travel Genius requires BlackBerry Maps and GPS reception.

Do you remember how fast your Blackberry was on the first day? Chances are that you have installed third-party applications like Facebook, Google Maps, some Twitter client and so on… As you switch from one application to the next, they stay in memory and consume precious resources. It is possible to switch them off one by one, but it we’re usually too lazy to do it.

Here comes QuickPull. This software will perform a reset when you ask it to, or on a pre-determined schedule, in order to keep your Blackberry as responsive as can be. That’s a violent way to close background applications, but no one thought of an easier way when they wrote the BlackBerry OS… don’t worry, most phone operating systems suffer from the same deficiency. Quickpull is a free application, and there’s a “pro” version that costs $2.99. The free version is available on the BlackBerry app store.
